In Catéchèse 26, which describes the horarium at Saint Mamas, Symeon exhorts the monk to give attention to the readings during liturgy and offices, and during the common meal.59 Symeon recommends that the monk study during morning and afternoon intervals.60 Finally, Symeon advises the monk to read “about six pages with attention,” alone after the evening office.61 This last example is most clearly spiritual reading in the fullest sense.
